A 40-year old male suspected of setting fire to the hut erected in Gadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll to welcome President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, is currently under arrest.
The fire was sighted at 10:30 p.m. Monday night.
The suspect was arrested later in the night, although police are yet to make an official statement on the arrest.
The palm frond and timber ‘Mariyadhuge’ hut, complete with a traditional ‘undhoali’ swing, was constructed by members of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
PPM members on the island allege that the fire that burned down the 13 feet tall, 8 feet wide hut to ashes was an act of arson.
Gadhoo, which is home to a population of 3,150 people, was visited by President Yameen on the 6th of August, this year.
