Chief Operating Officer for Housing Development Coporation (HDC), Ahmed Bunyaamin, stated on Saturday that the number of police officers operating in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale will be hiked very soon.

Due to the increasing number of road accidents, gang fights and theft in Hulhumale, people have been expressing concerns. While approximately 70,000 people reside in the suburb, people are concerned that there are not enough officers to maintain peace.

Only 80 officers are employed at the police station in Hulhumale.

Bunyaamin told local media Mihaaru that, according to the police, they have not been able to increase the number of officers in Hulhumale as currently there is no building specifically allocated for the police.

He noted that within the next two months, the new police building located near Central Park would be completed and more officers will be stationed at Hulhumale.

HDC and Police are working to stop the gang fights which mostly involve under-age children, according to Bunyaamin.

The police have stated that they are under-resourced in Hulhumale, and currently stationed in a section of the HDC building. The police have revealed that there is no "jail area" allocated to detain arrested suspects in their current office.

In this year alone, three people have lost their lives in road accidents while several youths have been injured in gang-related violence.
