Minister of Defence and National Security, Adam Shareef, revealed late Saturday that security forces have been mobilized upon receiving intelligence of a plot to disrupt public order over the coming days.

In a post on social media, Minister Shareef shared that Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Maldives Police Service were closely monitoring the situation following these reports.

He urged the public to come forward with any information regarding potential danger to national security.

The minister went on to guarantee that security forces will adhere to and carry out their lawful duties to protect the sovereignty and independence of Maldives, the religion of Islam and the Constitution, and the lives and properties of the people.

Shareef declined to give comments to the media regarding the security operation, stating that disclosing further details would lead to its failure.

This new development comes less than two months ahead of this year's Presidential Election, with political tensions already on the rise between the ruling party and opposition coalition.
