The Ministry for Islamic Affairs announce special prayers will be held across all inhabited islands on the night of 27 July, 2018 to commemorate the total lunar eclipse.

Astronomical calculations indicate that the eclipse will begin at 10:14 p.m. 27th July, 2018 continuing to 04:28 a.m. on the 28th of July, Saturday.

A spokesperson from the Islamic Ministry further elaborated that prayers are set to commence at 11:30 p.m. Friday night at the main mosques of every inhabited island in the Maldives.

For the citizens of the Male’ (Capital) region, prayers will take place at the Islamic Centre in Male’ City, Majid-ul Ikhlaas in Villimale’ and Masjid-Sheikh Qasim Bin Mohamed Al Sani in Hulhumale’.

The ministry also revealed that a special sermon has been organised following the lunar event.

Observers looking to the night sky on 27th July will witness a total lunar eclipse, the longest to take place in the 21st Century, thus far.

The moon will also be seen coloured in a distinctly red hue, thanks to a phenomenon commonly known as ‘blood moon’. The same effect is responsible for red sunrises, vivid sunsets and making the sky appear blue.
