The parliamentary Committee on National Security has passed an amendment to the Prisons and Parole Act, to change the name of Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) to National Prison Service.

The bill lobbied by Maavashu MP Ahmed Azhan Fahumy on behalf of the government, also proposes other minor amendments to the Act:

- Accord the power to promote MCS staff to the Commissioner of Prisons.

- If a convict's parole is terminated, parole cannot be granted again for the same sentence.

- Should an individual protest the decision of the Parole Board, they will receive no more than 20 days to file a court case.

The committee passed the bill after review without bringing further changes. The amendments will then be forwarded to the parliament floor for debate.
