President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim hosted their official reception to celebrate the Independence Day of Maldives, on Wednesday night.
At the event held in Dharubaaruge convention centre in capital Male, the president and first lady exchanged greetings in celebration of the day with Vice President Abdulla Jihad, foreign diplomats, ministers, parliamentarians, justices and other state dignitaries in attendance.
The Maldives government has planned several activities to celebrate Independence Day this year. The official ceremony will be held at Republic Square on Thursday night, while the activities and performances by students of various schools are to be held at the National Stadium on Friday night. A route march will also be held on Saturday.
Maldives celebrates its Independence Day on July 26, commemorating the end of the British protectorate over the island nation in 1965.
