Acting Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Nawaz, has called on the Maldivian judiciary to treat criminal offences against the police as acts of Class 1 misdemeanors, and convict the perpetrators as such.

He made the remark at a ceremony held Sunday to commemorate Police Memorial Day, the annual nation-wide event held to remember, honour and pay respects to the police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

In his address, Nawaz described Maldives Police Service as the shield protecting public safety. Thus any assaults on the police is an attack against the Maldivian community, he said.

Stating that peacekeeping is the national duty of Police, Nawaz said, "I call on the judicial courts of Maldives to impose the harshest punishments under the law, on those that compromise the peace of the community and incite discord."

Nawaz also urged the Prosecutor General to expedite charges against perpetrators that obstruct or assault officers of law enforcement.

"I harshly condemn all acts of obstruction against the police. The police institution have already investigated and forwarded several such cases to the Prosecutor General's Office," he said, describing the offences as uncivilized acts to obstruct law enforcement or inflict harm on police officers. "I take this opportunity to appeal the Prosecutor General to hasten prosecution in these cases."

Nawaz further declared that the memories of police officers who sacrificed their lives for their country will always live on, and vowed that their families would always receive the aid of Maldives Police Service.
