President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Monday appointed a vice chancellor at Islamic University of Maldives (IUM), to take over the institution's management from its chancellor Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.

The development comes after Dr. Shaheem was appointed as President Yameen's running mate for the Presidential Election 2018 slated for coming September.

IUM's new chancellor is Aishath Khaleela Abdul Sattar of Haa Dhaal Atoll's Vaikaradhoo, who has completed postgraduate education in religious studies.

Dr. Shaheem had initially declared after his appointment as Yameen's running mate, that he would resign as IUM chancellor. However in a press conference of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) held Monday, he announced that he would not be giving up his post at IUM upon the president's request.

"I will be working as an adviser," said Dr. Shaheem, who is also to lead PPM's campaign activities. He assured that his involvement in the campaign would not hinder the management of IUM.
