Main national religious advisory body, Maldives Fatwa Majlis, has announced an international conference next Sunday.

Speaking during a press conference, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad Baqir stated that the international meeting will consist of members from the supreme councils of Islamic affairs across the international Islam community.

The one-day meeting will be attended by members of Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Egypt, Jordon, Malaysia and Sudan. However, Saudi Arabia and Morocco are yet to confirm whether they would attend the sit-down.

Ziyad revealed that the meeting will mainly involve discussions on maintaining peace in and amongst countries, both in religious and social aspects.

Deputy Islamic minister and the council's vice president Ibrahim Ahmed stated that three bills, focusing on peace, will be presented and resolved at the international meeting.

The Fatwa Majlis was established after dissolving the Islamic jurisprudence academy after an amendment was ratified to the Law on the Protection of Religious Unity in 2016.

The members of the Fatwa Majlis were hand-picked by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom after taking the suggestions from the Islamic minister, Chief Justice, Maldives National University and Islamic University of Maldives into careful consideration.
