Ramla Ahmed, the first beauty queen of Maldives, passed away early Tuesday at the age of 83.
Born to the island of Baarah in Haa Alif Atoll, Ramla Ahmed had been ailing since last Ramadan, and passed away peacefully while receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in capital Male.
She is survived by seven children, and more than 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ramla won the first and last national beauty pageant held in Maldives in 1953. She was 18 when she won the nationwide pageant, which was held during the regime of Maldives' first president, Mohamed Ameen Didi.
