Police have started placing additional CCTV cameras around Male in order to increase safety in the capital city.
The police spokesperson and chief superintendent Ahmed Shifan said that they started the project to install 100 cameras last week. He added that they are seeking to procure an additional 57 cameras.
Locations of the new cameras are based on the reports Police have received regarding areas with higher criminal activities.
Currently the police are monitoring activities online around Male' through 196 cameras.
By the time the new project is completed, 353 cameras will be in operation around Male. Shifan added that the new state-of-the-art cameras can fully function even in dim lighting.
The cameras will be used to monitor activities around Male in the upcoming elections in September, which Shifan noted would be a hectic period.
Police stated that in addition to Male, cameras will be installed in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale as well.
