Adam Azim, the younger brother of convicted former Minister of Defence Mohamed Nazim, joined opposition Jumhoory Party late on Sunday.

Formerly the managing director of State Trading Organisation (STO) and currently a member of the opposition coalition's shadow cabinet, Adam Azim joined Jumhoory Party at a special ceremony held at the party's main hub of Kunooz in capital Male.

He was also appointed as advisor to the party's leader.

Speaking at the ceremony, Azim declared it was a new beginning for him to bring an end to the injustice and oppression in the Maldives. He vowed that success would come soon.

He went on to proclaim that JP's leader Qasim Ibrahim was one of the first to fight for democracy in the island nation, and he called on everyone to join the party to support Qasim's efforts.

In addition to Azim, lawyer Mohamed Fareed also joined Jumhoory Party on Sunday night.

There has been a recent upsurge in the number of politicians to join Jumhoory Party, including high profile names such as former Vice President Mohamed Jameel, former chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ali Waheed, former minister at the President's Office Abdulla Ameen, and former Minster of Youth and Sports Maleeh Jamaal.

Jumhoory Party has also announced its congress slated towards the end of this month. The party will run elections for its top posts during the congress, including the posts of party leader, party president, vice president, four deputy leaders, youth league and women's league leader, deputy leader, secretary and two members.
