Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) officially launched its presidential campaign on Thursday night.

Titled "Jazeera Raajje", the campaign was inaugurated in a special ceremony held at MDP's main hub in capital Male City. The campaign was also launched across the atolls via Facebook Live.

Speaking at the ceremony, MDP's campaign manager and Hithadhoo South MP Mohamed Aslam stated that the party's campaign committee have already finalised plans on how to carry out the campaign. He assured that MDP's campaign trips to the islands will commence very soon.

"Our first course of action is to gather the people's ideas and discussion points for our party's manifesto."

While MDP has officially commenced its campaign, the party along with Jumhoory Party, Adhaalath Party and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom of the joint opposition, had earlier declared that the coalition would nominate a single candidate for the Presidential Election this year. The discussions to put forward a single candidate are still ongoing.

MDP has announced former President Mohamed Nasheed as its sole candidate after its primary election. However, the Elections Commission refused to accept MDP's presidential primary, pointing out that Nasheed is currently convicted of terrorism charges and sentenced to 13 years in jail, which renders him ineligible to run for president.
