All public school in the Maldives closed Thursday as the first semester of this academic year concluded, and the semester break commenced.

The break will last a week and the second semester is scheduled to begin June 18.

The first semester began January 14, and 98-days of study were held during this period. Semester two is set to have 105-days of study.

There are about 80,000 students currently enrolled in 200 schools across the Maldives.

The Ministry of Education had said that a lot of changes would be brought to the education structure in 2018 – most significant being the digitalisation of all public schools in the country.

Most of the preparations to digitize schools are already complete, and schools will begin using tablets in the second semester, the education ministry had said.

Other major changes being implemented by the education ministry include training staff to teach students with special needs in an effort to make education more accessible to all children.
