Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim stated on Tuesday that over 900 dustbins are to be placed along the roads of capital Male.

While speaking at a ceremony held to launch the program, Minister Thoriq said it would be a solution to public concerns over lack of roadside dustbins.

Thoriq highlighted the importance of thinking about our environment and minimizing waste production.

The dustbins are small and will be places along all the roads of Male.

The first ones were placed in Chaadhanee Magu, with one specified for plastic waste and the other for general waste.

Thoriq noted that plastics can be recycled and used for a different purpose to reduce waste.

Deputy Minister Ali Amir also noted that while dustbins had been previously placed in Male, the initiative did not last.

Amir stated that this new program would be completed in the coming two to three months.

Environment Ministry added that Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) is in charge of the dustbins and they would be emptied daily.
