Hundreds of people queued outside Huravee Building late Friday night to register for the programme that allows citizens to attain driving licenses in a day.

While the registration was set begin at 9:00 pm, people began queuing in the business district of the capital Male, way ahead.

The long line of people waiting for the fast tracked route to getting their driving license, extended beyond Hukuru Miskiiy, located on the other side of Huravee Building.

The registration process for the programme would continue Saturday and Monday between 9:00 pm – 12:00am, Maldives transport Authority had notified.

“It was such a hassle to get the license before; you have to pay some driving school a big fee, and then wait in a huge line before you can take the theory exam. And then days later [they’d] call you for the practical. But with this programme, the whole procedure is done with in a day,” a young person waiting in the queue said.

The programme titled “Ehlakin Mashah License” (loosely translates to ‘license in one go’) allows applicants to take the driving theory and practical test on the same day. Currently, it takes up to a week to obtain the license as the two tests are spaced out.

The programme includes issuing licenses for all types of vehicles including heavy-duty pick-ups and lorries.

Interested parties are to submit the participation form for the programme, along with the driving license application form. Additionally, an ID card copy, a photo and a stamp are also to be submitted along with the forms.

There are no additional charges, except for the theory exam and license card fee, the authority had stated.

The transport authority had revealed that the programme would continue in the atolls as well.
