Haa Alif Atoll's Dhidhdhoo island council president Ali Hashim has been remanded for five days.
The council president, who is a member of main opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), was arrested late Tuesday for allegedly forging counterfeit documents.
According to the police spokesperson, he was presented at the magistrate court of Fihladhoo island in the same atoll for his remand hearing. The court had decided to remand him by five days.
The police had raided Hashim's residence following his arrest. In addition, Dhidhdhoo council's office was searched by the police in April.
Hashim was also suspended in September 2017 for issuing a public letter implying that he would draw up a list of Dhidhdhoo residents that would receive the row houses developed in the island, in contravention to the official list that had been drawn up by the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure.
