President Yameen awards winner of Maldives' first international Quran contest

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom presented the award to the winner of "Al-Nour Al Mubin" International Quran Competition, the first ever international Quran contest to be hosted by the Maldives.

He presented the award and certificate to the winner, Abdulla Mohamed Khathim Al-Khayyat from Kuwait, at the award giving ceremony held late Thursday at the Islamic Centre in capital Male. Khayyat received a cash prize of USD 30,000 (MVR 462,000).

Coming in second place was Hamith Awsar from Turkey, who received USD 15,000 (MVR 231,000).

The third place winner was Ashraq Nazir from the Maldives. The government gifted him USD 5,000 (MVR 77,100).

Held from last Sunday through Tuesday, the "Al-Nour Al Mubin" International Quran Competition was a collaborative effort of the Centre for the Holy Quran, Ministry of Islamic Affairs, and Public Service Media (PSM), under the patronage of President Yameen.

Along with the Maldives, representatives from Bangladesh, Egypt, Kuwait, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Turkey participated in the competition. The judging panel comprised of judges from the Maldives, Malaysia, Pakistan, Sudan and Yemen.

Speaking at the ceremony, Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Ziyad Baqir stated that it was a privilege for the Maldives to host the contest.
