President Abdulla Yameen on Wednesday appointed Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) leader Mohamed “Colonel” Nasheed as the Ambassador of Maldives to Thailand.
The president presented the letter of appointment to the new ambassador at a ceremony held at the President’s Office in the capital Male.
The parliament had green-lighted Nasheed’s appointment as Maldives’ ambassador to Thailand last June.
Nasheed had served at the parliament from 2009 – 2014 as the MP for Nolhivaran constituency. During that time, Nasheed was member to several parliamentary committees and he had also chaired the Parliamentary Friendship Group between Maldives and Indonesia, which was created in an effort to foster better relations between the two countries.
Nasheed was a member of Maldives’ main opposition the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) during its early years. He later joined DRP – which was founded by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom – however, shortly after he joined the party, it split into factions and the former president created the current ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), and handed the administration of DRP to Nasheed.
“Colonel” Nasheed started his career at Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). He had then served as a Dhivehi teacher at Dharumavantha School in the capital before he began his political career.
He has a bachelor’s degree in Arts and Linguistics, and a master’s in Business Administration.
