A member of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has stated that parliamentary sittings will resume next Sunday after a six week hiatus.
Mihaaru understands that PPM parliamentary group leader and Villimale MP Ahmed Nihan revealed that the parliamentary sitting will resume next Sunday. However, the agenda and bills for debate have not been disclosed yet.
The last parliament session was held on March 14. According to the parliament regulations, the parliament sittings are divided into three tenures. The first tenure is from the beginning of February till the end of April. Only 10 sittings have been held since the commencement of the first tenure.
The parliamentary regulations further state that sittings must be held every week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays excluding parliamentary recess.
Whilst opposition members claim that the ruling party and parliamentary speaker Abdulla Maseeh are accountable for the sittings' halt, Nihan argued that the unexpected recess in parliament was due to lack of cooperation from the opposition members in debating on the presented bills.
