A local man who went missing after a dangerous marine accident between two speedboats late Thursday has been found dead.

The accident occurred when the speedboats, both from Ithaafushi resort in Kaafu Atoll, crashed into each other six miles off the coast of Gulhi in the same atoll. The local who went missing was Ahmed Mohamed, 37, of Dhaalu Atoll Kudahuvadhoo, who was the captain of one of the speedboats.

His body was found 45 metres underwater by divers of the Coast Guard, 12 hours after the accident. The remains has since been brought to capital Male.

According to Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the missing steering wheel of the speedboat was also found in the same area.

Eight expatriates and another local were also injured in the accident and brought to ADK Hospital in Male. One of the expatriates, a Bangladeshi national who was a crew member on one of the speedboats, passed away late Thursday night while receiving treatment.

ADK Hospital has since discharged five of the patients, stating that they were in good health. The other two are still hospitalized.
