Maldives Police Services’ Special Operations (SO) unit commander was replaced last Sunday, a source has confirmed to Mihaaru.

Inspector Ibrahim Mohamed, the former commander of the notorious SO unit was transferred as a custodial head, and the former traffic police commander Chief Inspector Abdul Matheen Abdul had replaced him as the head of the SO, the source revealed.

The police have not made any official comments regarding the internal shuffle yet.

After the contentious Supreme Court verdict February 1, which ordered the release of several high-profile political detainees, the police force was the first state institution to back the court’s verdict.

Shortly after it backed the apex court, the Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef was sacked along with SO Commander Ibrahim and the latter was replaced with Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commander Hussain Saif. Saif was also sacked and subsequently arrested after a few weeks amidst the political turmoil in the country during the state of emergency.

Currently, the Deputy Commissioner of Police Abdullah Nawwaz is the acting head of Maldives’ police force.
