Six people have been arrested over a large amount of liquor discovered in a house in capital Male.

During a special operation, the police seized over 400 bottles of alcohol and over 80 bottles of beer. The people were arrested after they smuggled the liquor to Male and were in the midst of storing the bottles.

According to the police, the arrested are four locals and two expatriates, the latter of whom were living illegally in the Maldives.

During a press conference, the Drug Enforcement Department's Acting Head Inspector of Police, Rajny Shuaib, stated that those arrested have previous records of alcohol cases and violence. He added that the house they were arrested from was rented to carry out illegal alcohol business.

After further investigations, the police had found that the liquor had originally been issued to Bondware Housing Safari in Hulhumale. Rajny also stated that work is underway to arrest more suspects in relation to the case.

As liquor permits are only issued to serve tourists, Rajny warned the public to be aware of those storing and selling liquor illegally, especially from local houses.
