Police revealed on Wednesday that a man has been arrested in relation to the arson attack on ruling Progressive Party of Maldives’s (PPM) hub, “Rumaalu Jagaha" in capital Male.

On late March 24, a man broke into the PPM hub, doused the stage in petrol and set it ablaze. The stage, podium and a table were damaged beyond repair.

According to the police spokesperson. the 28-year-old's remand has been extended by 15 days. The police did not give details of when he was arrested or any other information related to the suspect.

PPM has been accusing the opposition of carrying out the incident. However, the opposition claims that PPM orchestrated the arson attack in order to blame the opposition parties.

The joint opposition noted that it would be impossible to carry out such an attack on PPM's hub without an insider as there the hub has round-the-clock security and surveillance cameras.
