Family of opposition Kinbidhoo lawmaker Abdulla Riyaz has requested prosecutors to review the lawmaker’s remand.
MP Riyaz was charged with terrorism for orchestrating a coup against the government. Criminal Court had remanded the opposition lawmaker until the end of trial.
In a letter sent by MP Riyaz’s spouse to Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham last Wednesday, the family had stated that the Criminal Court’s sentence to remand the lawmaker until the end of trial in the absence of his lawmakers was unlawful as it is a clear violation of his Constitutional rights.
The letter further said that MP Riyaz has been denied of family visitations after his detainment in Maafushi Prison and urged the prosecutors to review his remand.
MP Riyaz was arrested from an opposition protest, during the state of emergency, calling to release the opposition’s political leaders as per the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling of February 1.
