A tornado has struck Shaviyani Atoll Lhaimagu, damaging several buildings and injuring one person amid heavy rain across the Maldives.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said today that the injured person was struck by a falling sheet of tin and sustained a head injury. The person is receiving medical treatment, NDMA said.

According to NDMA, the roofs of four houses and several warehouses were heavily damaged by the tornado.

The incident comes as the Maldives braces for further heavy rain, with the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) forecasting rainfall across much of the country until Wednesday.

MET said some islands are likely to experience heavy downpours and thunderstorms, and urged the public to take precautions against possible flooding.
