Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has opened applications for the position of Supreme Court judge.
The announcement seeking an individual for the Supreme Court bench was made following the JSC's decision to grant the retirement of Supreme Court judge Ali Rasheed starting from December 1, after he submitted a request to retire.
In an announcement made, the JSC stated that the opportunity to apply has been opened for parties interested in applying for the position of Supreme Court Justice.
Supreme Court Justices receive MVR 59,700 per month as salary, MVR 25,000 as living allowance, and MVR 3,300 as risk allowance. Additionally, other benefits determined by the parliament are also received.
Individuals applying for the post must hold a first degree in Islamic Sharia, law, or law and Islamic Sharia. Furthermore, applicants must possess at least seven years of experience as a judge, practicing attorney, or both combined.
Parties interested in the post must submit applications before 10:00 AM Sunday through JSC's Fahires portal.
Judges are appointed to the Supreme Court upon parliament approval of names submitted by the President on the advice of the JSC.
The reason why Ali Rasheed is retiring from the position of justice is also not clear.
Justice Ali Rasheed is an individual who served as a Criminal Court Judge, Chief Judge of the Civil Court, and Drug Court Judge. He was also the presiding judge of the five-judge bench that sentenced former President Abdulla Yameen to prison in 2019 at the Criminal Court.
He was appointed to the Supreme Court six years ago.
