The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has decided to retire Supreme Court Justice Ali Rasheed starting from December 1, 2026.
Judge Ali Rasheed submitted to retire from the position of justice in October.
A statement issued by the JSC today said that after reviewing matters required under the Judges Act and the Retirement Regulations, the JSC decided at its meeting held last Wednesday to grant judge Ali Rasheed's retirement starting from December as requested.
The JSC stated that in connection with this matter, the commission is working to complete the procedures specified in the Judges Act to find an individual for the position of Supreme Court Justice.
The reason why Ali Rasheed is retiring from the position of justice is also not clear.
Justice Ali Rasheed is an individual who served as a Criminal Court Judge, Chief Judge of the Civil Court, and Drug Court Judge. He was also the presiding judge of the five-judge bench that sentenced former President Abdulla Yameen to prison in 2019 at the Criminal Court.
He was appointed to the Supreme Court six years ago.
While serving as a Supreme Court Justice, disciplinary complaints against Ali Rasheed were also submitted to the JSC. However, none of those complaints were proven against him.
