The individual recently arrested for defecating inside the Furqan Mosque in Male' has been released upon completion of his sentence.
The individual who was arrested is Naushad Moosa, 32, G. Male' Hiyaa, 13-02.
The 32-year-old was arrested on 12 October for allegedly violating the sanctity of a mosque by defecating inside it. After his initial 15-day remand period expired, he was brought before the court again, which ordered him to remain in custody until the conclusion of the trial.
However, a picture of him sleeping inside the mosque after his release was publicized today.
Police said that in the case where Moosa damaged the mosque, the crime had been proven against him and was served a sentence of one month and 15 days on 1st November.
However, police said the court ruled that, as he had already spent one month and 21 days in remand, that period would be deducted from his sentence, meaning he would not have to serve any additional time in prison.
Police said that because of this, the Criminal Court voided the sentence to keep him detained.
Moosa has been previously arrested for throwing away holy Qurans (Hatheem) and damaging a mosque.
He was previously arrested after allegedly scattering copies of the Quran inside Furqan Mosque, damaging the building and destroying several electrical boards.
He was also arrested in connection with a separate case in which he allegedly exposed his genitals to a group of women inside a mosque.
