The Parliament has rejected the resolution submitted by South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem in seeking MPs opinions regarding the government's decision to repossess 14 plots of land under Male' City Council jurisdiction.

Of the 63 members who attended today's Parliament sitting on whether the resolution should be accepted, 51 MPs voted against accepting the resolution, with 11 MPs voting in favor.

The resolution submitted by Meekail reads that according to the amendment to the Decentralization Act, plots and facilities under council jurisdiction can be taken by the government for state development project purposes only after holding a discussion with the council. On that basis, Meekail highlighted in the resolution that if a plot is being taken for a project, the project information needs to be shared to the public.

While the act says as such, Meekail stated in the resolution that the government did not take the necessary steps in taking the plot from Male' City Council.

"At a time when the council is working on development projects and important plans to benefit citizens, including parking structures to ease congestion in Male' and the development of vacant spaces into pleasant public squares, such a decision could result in significant losses for the people of Male' and the council," Meekail said in the resolution.

Male' City Council has deemed that the decision by the government to take 14 plots under the jurisdiction of the council and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development having sent the council a letter informing them of the decision is a violation of the law, with the council filing a case to the Civil Court.

After deciding to take the plots, the ministry said that the decision was made to conduct necessary development efforts for the population of Male' and Villimale' and to provide infrastructural service.
