Nominations are now open for membership of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC).
The nomination process, which requires Parliament to appoint the commission's members, was opened following the resignation of former MMBC President Mohamed Farushath.
The requirements for membership of the commission, which was established last year, include being at least 30 years old and holding a first degree in journalism, broadcasting, policymaking or management, or having at least five years of experience in the media industry.
Other requirements stipulate that nominees must not be shareholders in a media organization, hold an editorial position, or be elected or appointed to a public office. They must also not be members of a political party or have been convicted of an offence classified as a crime under Islamic law.
Other requirements:
- Must not have been criminally charged in the crime of selling drugs.
- Must not have been criminally charged in the crime of child sexual abuse.
- Must not have been criminally charged in the crime of fraud or bribery.
- Must not be a shareholder in a business in the communication and media service industry.
Members appointed to the commission have a five-year term. Members will not be able to serve on the commission for two consecutive terms nor can they serve for more than a single term.
Those interested in applying for the position can do so by submitting the application form, affidavit, criminal and debt forms, Maldivian ID card copy, curriculum vitae and a copy of their education certificate by 16th November, 12:00 pm to the Parliament.
Although the Elections Commissions opened nominations to apply for the board, only four media representatives contested for membership. As no other candidates came forward, all four were appointed without an election. They are Abdul Ghazee Ibrahim, Zam'ath Ahmed Wheed, Simaha Naseem and Hussain Safeeq.
The three nominees who were appointed by the Parliament are former President Farushath, former President of the Broadcasting Commission Sofa Shafeeq and former Broadcasting Commission member Aminath Sarahath Izzath.
