Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources has extended the nomination period for the 2026 Fishermen's Award (Keyolhu Award).

The nomination period for the award to celebrate Fishermen's Day 2026 began on 7th October and expired yesterday.

An announcement from the ministry reads that the period has been extended to Saturday, 12:00 pm.

There are four award categories for this year's award. Unlike other years, this year's award has also included female Keyolhus (skippers).

Those who can apply for the awards are:

  • The most dedicated young Keyolhu (under 35 years of age) who is currently actively engaged in fishing and does not do any other work to earn an income besides fishing.
  • The most experienced Keyolhu (above 35 years of age) who is currently actively engaged in fishing and does not do any other work to earn an income besides fishing.
  • The dedicated reef fisherman award for the most dedicated reef fisherman whose main income-generating work is reef fishing.
  • The dedicated female fisherman award for a female fisherman who is actively engaged in fishing and fishes to earn an income.

The ministry also stated that forms prepared to apply for these awards can be downloaded from the ministry's website, www.fishagriocean.gov.mv.

Nominations for these awards can be submitted in an individual capacity or on behalf of someone else.

Fishermen's Day is celebrated in the Maldives on 10th December every year.
