A book containing short stories written years ago by former President Mohamed Nasheed has been published.

Named "Kuruvaahaka - 80s ge Kureekolhu" (Short Stories - The Early 80s), the book was published by Nasheed's aunt, Zuhaira Umar.

During last night's ceremony, Nasheed said he was proud the book was published by popular storyteller Zuhaira.

Nasheed's book includes stories such as "Chaalaa Zamaan" (Charming Times), "Gaumee Mashroou" (National Project), "Reethi Hadhiyaa" (Beautiful Present), "Hithaa Hithuge Gulhun" (Heart to Heart Connection) and "Moosabaru" (Captain Moresby). In these stories, Nasheed wrote about his time under house arrest after being released from prison in 1994.

The stories tell the lifestyle and how Male' was at the time, with the main character being "Hassan Kurusee". In addition to Kurusee, Yula is an important name in these stories as well.

While talking about Hassan Kurusee's character, Nasheed said that his character "Hassan Kurusee" is definitely not the same "Hassan Kurusee" that is active on X, Facebook and Instagram.

"They are quite different in personality and mood. Hassan Kurusee is thin. He does not have a stomach or hip. He is not tall. He has a full head of hair. He is about to turn 30 in these stories," described Nasheed.

Nasheed stated last night that he thinks the "Hassan Kurusee" in the story is the writer. Nasheed wrote about the things that happened in Hassan Kurusee's life in a comedic and silly manner. The feelings and emotions experienced by "Hassan Kurusee" were described in great detail.

The Heart to Heart Connection story reads: "What Kurusee feared the most began happening not even seven months after Aminath Yula's passing. He began to forget."

"While embracing Khadheeja that night in the courtyard, Kurusee began noticing what happens when two hearts connect. Things that happen when you do not want something but did in the past. Things that happen when they begin to bloom. All types of emotions. Things that happen when two hearts connect."

The descriptions written with feeling by Nasheed in these stories were quite notable, such as:

"The spinning fans spread hot air into the room. The whole room is stuffy. Scientists would not be able to describe the formula from the mixture of fried short eats and the musk from an armpit. Thousands of smells. The whole teahouse has become one. Shouting from tea bringers overlap each other. The entire place is congested. People would have to turn into some kind of liquid to be able to get up from their seat, pay at the counter and leave."

Nasheed wrote the stories in a way where readers would be able to take their own meaning from them. He said that he wants to leave it up to the readers.

"Once the letters are on the page, it is up to the reader to interpret it," said Nasheed.

And so, Nasheed requested everyone to think deeply about the stories. If the readers see a story as a love story, if it is a funny story, then they should interpret it as such, said Nasheed.

"If you think about things too much, do not think about it at a surface level. Do not think about it too deeply or say that one thing is another and become too worried," stated Nasheed.

From Kurusee's experience, Nasheed's stories describe Maldivian systems, the political state and investigative procedures at the time very clearly.

"Hassan Kurusee had a thought when he read the Maldivian Constitution: Here is a book that describes how someone can fall behind in life," wrote Nasheed in the story.

There are five stories based on the life of "Kurusee", with Nasheed saying that there are many other things happening in his life. While sharing one of the stories, Nasheed spoke about how "Kurusee" acted when Nasheed stepped down as President.

"Kurusee was Nasheed's bodyguard on 7th February. He was at the Ministry of Finance and Treasury. He was a trained officer. His level of training is the same as someone trapping and breaking their arm in the metal door of the ministry and not even being able to start..." said Nasheed while laughing.

However, Nasheed said he does not have plans to write more about the life of "Kurusee".

Nasheed wrote in the introduction of the book that he is publishing it to generate more income.

"A large portion of the pension for former presidents has been cut. The money I put away to build a house on a plot at Laamu Atoll has been spent. I do not receive a salary at my position as chairperson," Nasheed wrote jokingly.

It is being printed by a publishing house former President Nasheed has a share in known as Ocean Publishing. The book is priced at MVR 250.

Nasheed was a writer and a journalist before he stepped out onto the political arena. He criticized President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's government and wrote for Sangu News. He faced political imprisonment during that time over his writings. In addition to writing history books, Nasheed has written columns for newspapers in Maldives and other countries from time to time.

The books he has written includes "Dhangandu Dhahana" (Iron Armor), "Kihlaa Male'' (Male' Fortress), "Ebbasvevey Ingilaabu" (Agreeable Revolution) and "Dheradhun" (Two Kings). Additionally, he published a study on Mohamed Ameen's government being revolutionized in 1953 named "Veriehge Nimun" (The End of a Ruler).
