Ahmed Fairish, who was arrested for posing public nuisance to neighbours, has escaped from the Drug Rehabilitation Centre in K. Himmafushi, where he was being held for treatment.
Police said today that Fairish had been transferred to the Himmafushi rehab centre, run by the National Drug Agency (NDA), under police oversight. They said that they received reports this afternoon that Fairish had run away from the centre.
No further details have been disclosed as of yet.
Fairish was arrested on October 18, accused of vandalism, threatening and intimidation, assault and obstructing police duties. The court subsequently placed him in remand in custody for 15 days. His remand order is set to expire next Monday.
The remand order states that he is being held in custody as he may pose a danger to society. However, it adds that Fairish denies all charges.
Fairish has been arrested on several instances in the past as well for various offences, including threatening an individual and damaging property.
Fairish's most recent arrest came after a neighbour, Mohamed Saeed, faced with continued harassment from him, staged a hunger strike. Saeed said at the time that he had decided to stage the hunger strike demanding action against Fairish due to having failed to see any results despite having reported the case to several relevant agencies.
Saeed said that residents in his area, covering Kashimaa Hin'gun and Dhoohimeri Magu in Henveiru, had been repeatedly raising concerns about harassment from Fairish for a long time now.
Saeed said that several separate reports had been made to the police about harassment from Fairish over the past year and a half.
