President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said all eligible applicants who applied for land under the government’s Housing for All programme will be allocated plots in Rasmale’.

A total of 58,505 applications were submitted before the deadline, including 22,575 applications for land and 35,930 for flats. The Ministry of Housing is currently reviewing the applications.

President Muizzu said the Maldives Marina and Waterfront project, which is being developed by UAE based Eagle Hills in Rasmale’, would not affect the government’s housing plans for Maldivians.

“All the eligible people who applied for land here will be guaranteed housing here. There is so much space,” he said, adding that the number of applicants would not prevent the government from fulfilling its housing commitments.

The President said the wider development of Rasmale’ would cover the 500-hectare site allocated for the Eagle Hills project. He added that companies had expressed interest in providing electricity, water and sewerage services across the island, as the scale of development would make their investments viable.

President Muizzu said the government had initially planned to procure electricity and water services for the Rasmale’ Marina project itself.

He contrasted the plans with the development of Hulhumale', saying Rasmale’ would not have to wait for the remaining 650 hectares to be developed before infrastructure services could be established.

“Even after 30 years, Hulhumale' has not been provided with water and sewerage. Hulhumale' became Hulhumale' because of the bridge,” he said.

President Muizzu said Rasmale’ would become a vibrant city within a maximum of 10 years. He accused opposition groups of campaigning against the project to prevent the government from delivering on its housing promises.

The President said the list of land recipients would be finalized by the end of this year, while the flats are expected to be completed by mid-2028.

He said the administration aimed to become the first government to begin and deliver the promised housing project.
