Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) has submitted a case to police asking to investigate harassment and threats against some journalists on social media, and to provide appropriate protection.
A letter sent by the MJA addressed to Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed states that journalists who participated in a media outreach trip organized by Rasmale' project developer Eagle Hills are facing targeted harassment and hate speech.
The letter stated that some persons are sharing photos of these journalists and labelling them as traitors and jews, as well as other insults and verbal abuse.
The MJA stated that such harassment against journalists who are working in line with the policies of their organization are unacceptable and deeply concerning.
Such attacks are creating fear for journalists and their families, and they are being exposed to possible dangers, MJA said.
The MJA also noted that harassment of journalists on social media has been seen previously as well.
The MJA appealed to the police to expedite investigation into the harassment faced by journalists in relation to the Eagle Hills project. They requested that a security assessment be conducted for the journalists being targeted, and to provide them with protection.
The MJA also shared with police screenshots of several social media posts harassing said journalists.
