The Women’s Development Committee of Haa Alifu Filladhoo will award MVR 1,000 to each child who successfully memorises Juz Amma, the final section of the Quran.
The Filladhoo Council announced on Monday that registration for the 'Amma Foiy' memorisation programme is open to children under the age of 18 until tomorrow.
A total of 20 children have registered for the programme so far, the council said.
Under the programme’s rules, the Quran recitation assessment will be held during Ramadan and conducted by a person with higher qualifications in Quranic studies. Children who pass the assessment will receive MVR 1,000.
The initiative aims to encourage Quran memorization among children in the island, which has a population of around 1,200 and currently has no Hafiz; a person who has memorized the entire Quran.
The committee hopes the programme will help address this by encouraging more children to pursue Quran memorization.
