Three former officers of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)'s Special Protection Group (SPG) were arrested on Wednesday night.
Mihaaru has come to know that Simad Ahmed, Ahmed Shaneez and Ahmed Fathaah were arrested by Special Operations (SO) police and taken to Dhoonidhoo detention centre.
Simad had served as a bodyguard to former presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed, Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh and some state ministers. Shaneez and Fathaah both were bodyguards to Nasheed and some state ministers.
Both Simad and Shaneez were arrested on February 23 for allegedly trying to create disorder within MNDF and for leaking information outside of the institution. They were both dismissed on March 6, after they refused to comply with the order to hand in their resignations.
During the chaos that erupted after the Supreme Court’s shock verdict on February 1 to release nine political prisoners and reinstate 12 parliamentarians, Simad and Shaneez were arrested and taken to Girifushi island. However, after they refused to hand in their resignations, they were shifted to the MNDF headquarters in airport island Hulhule.
In addition to MNDF officers, several police officers have also been arrested for allegedly creating disorder within the police force after February 1.
