The owner of the privately operated petrol shed in Sh. Funadhoo which burned down in a major fire incident on Sunday has stated that he believes the fire was likely caused by an electrical short circuit.
Fire broke out at the island's sole petrol shed at around 7am on Sunday. The blaze spread to surrounding premises, causing major damage to five homes, three garages, and a motorcycle in the vicinity.
Mohamed Vishal, owner of the 'Faiymini' Petrol Shed, stated that police, citing investigations so far, had told him that they believed the fire had been caused by an electrical short circuit in the distribution board.
As he is yet to receive full details, he is unable to confirm at the moment the extent of the damage and loss caused, he said, adding that he believes he is facing major loss as the entire shed was burned to the ground in the fire.
Vishal said that fuel supply at the shed had been most recently topped up last week. The fire broke out on the day when the shed was scheduled to receive a fuel refill.
Eleven residents of homes damaged in the fire were provided temporary shelter and meal arrangements. Eighteen individuals required treatment in hospital for varying levels of injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation.
A Major Crime Investigation team from the police has gone to Funadhoo to conduct the subsequent investigation.
