Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has scheduled a National Council meeting to discuss the party's stance and actions in response to the government's proposed Eagle Hills project in Rasmale'.
The meeting, requested jointly by 60 National Council members, is planned to be held on Sunday night.
MDP's ranks hold differing opinions on the Rasmale' project. When members suggested holding a National Council meeting to discuss the issue, the party's Chairperson, former President Mohamed Nasheed, responded that it is unadvisable for the party to oppose the project.
Nasheed reminded that the party has previously issued a statement on the issue, and advised to maintain the stance publicized then. He also urged National Council members to refrain from actions and remarks that go against the stance announced in this statement.
Nasheed's response led to several members voicing concerns and reservations in the National Council's WhatsApp group. Some of these members maintain that MDP must not blindly accept the Eagle Hills project. They recommend that the party actively oppose the project.
Although several opposition figures continue to oppose the Eagle Hills' Rasmale' project, Nasheed himself has not joined these efforts. He has previously said that he believes the project is sound in principle, and that his only reservation is that the project is located in the Greater Male' region.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, however, has strongly questioned the terms of the Eagle Hills project, and stated that it must not be allowed to proceed should an MDP administration come to office.
Former Home Minister Imran Abdulla has also launched concerted efforts against the Rasmale' project. A number of MDP parliamentarians have also joined Imran's initiative. However, MDP, as a party, has not officially endorsed or joined the initiative as of yet.
The previous statement from MDP that Nasheed referred to states that the party welcomes foreign investors. It further states that the party will support all solid efforts to facilitate expansion of the private sector and free trade, and promote the Maldives' economy.
However, the statement also highlights that the party has observed several discrepancies in the information disclosed by the government regarding the Eagles Hill project, and official statements issued by the developer.
