Police arrested four opposition lawmakers from the protests held late Wednesday.

The detained MPs are Maariya Ahmed Didi, Mohamed Ameeth, Ali Hussain and Faisal Naseem. In addition, the police had also arrested Mohamed Aslam, who was the housing minister during main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s government. It is not clear why they were arrested.

The opposition coalition took to the streets, calling for the release of political prisoners. The protests have been ongoing since the Supreme Court’s shocking verdict on February 1 to release nine political prisoners and reinstate 12 parliamentarians.
