A sizable amount of gold hidden inside the body of two people going from Maldives to Dhaka, Bangladesh has been seized.

The gold seized by Bangladesh's Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) on 18th October weighed 2.73 kilograms, which has a street value of BDT (Bangladeshi Taka) 4 million (around MVR 5 million).

Bangladeshi media reported that when the two men were stopped and searched at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC), it was revealed that they were Bangladeshi nationals who traveled from Maldives to Bangladesh via US-Bangla Airlines.

According to reports, their names are Mohamed Sulaiman and Jobaidh Ahmed, and they attempted to smuggle in gold paste shaped into eggs hidden in body cavities. CIID officials stated they found three pieces of gold from each person.

CIID said that they closely monitor and screen passengers who may be a risk to their efforts in stopping gold being smuggled in.

While a sizable amount of gold was seized from two individuals traveling from Maldives to Bangladesh, gold bars were seized from a Bangladeshi national traveling from Abu Dhabi to Shah Amanat International Airport on the same morning. The bars were hidden inside a cooking pot and a vegetable grater.
