MDP Chairperson, former President Mohamed Nasheed, has warned that harassing Eagle Hills Chairman Mohamed Alabbar over discontent regarding the proposed project in Rasmale' will negatively affect the country.
The government and Eagle Hills has faced heavy backlash from opposition parties and other critics following the announcement of a major project in Rasmale'.
In a message sent last night to the MDP National Council's WhatsApp group, Nasheed said that harassing Alabbar over the project would cause loss to the Maldives. This, he warned, could disrupt ongoing UAE investments in the country.
Nasheed reiterated that the MDP has previously issued a statement regarding the Eagle Hills project in Rasmale'.
Nasheed reminded that former Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim had been dismissed from the MDP for making statements in violation of the party's policies. Saying this, he indirectly called on party members to refrain from speaking against party policies.
Although many opposition figures continue to advocate against the Eagle Hills project, Nasheed himself has not done so. He has previously said that he is, in principle, in favour of the project and that his only concern is that it is located in the Greater Male' Area.
The MDP's statement that Nasheed referred to states that the party welcomes foreign investments. It adds that the party would always support efforts to expand the private sector and facilitate more free trade to improve the country's economy.
The statement, however, goes on to call on the government to disclose details of the Eagle Hills agreement to the public, noting that they have observed several discrepancies in what the company has publicly stated, and what the government has said.
