The International Islamic University Islamabad has conferred an honorary doctorate on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his state visit to Pakistan.
The award was presented at a ceremony held this afternoon in recognition of President Muizzu’s contributions to politics and foreign relations, the development of the Maldives and the defence of Islam, according to the university.
President Muizzu's state visit marks the first visit by a Maldivian head of state to the country in 10 years. Former President Abdulla Yameen last visited Pakistan in 2015, while former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom also visited the country during his administration.
The visit includes official talks with Pakistani leaders and the signing of 20 memorandums of understanding covering areas including aviation, healthcare, cybersecurity, defence, maritime security, fisheries and agriculture.
President Muizzu is also scheduled to attend a dinner hosted in his honour by Pakistan’s President and Prime Minister, meet Maldivian families living in Pakistan and address a business forum aimed at promoting economic ties between the two countries.
The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Pakistan, established on 26 July 1966.
