Bank of Maldives (BML) Head of Marketing and Strategy Mohamed Saeed has ended his hunger strike after 35 hours, following assurances from authorities of continued cooperation in addressing complaints against Ahmed Fairish.
Saeed announced the end of his strike in a Facebook post, thanking the authorities for their assurances and pledging to monitor their implementation.
“I thank Home Minister Ali Ihusan for his own promise. I will be watching these promises closely to ensure that they are fully implemented,” Saeed said.
He also thanked his family, supporters, the media and social media users for helping bring the issue to public attention. Saeed acknowledged the support of his constituency MP, Ismail Nizar.
Saeed had begun the hunger strike after alleging that repeated complaints about Fairish’s conduct towards his family and neighbours had failed to produce results.
He said incidents in the Henveiru area, particularly around Kashimaa Hingun and Dhoohimeri Magu, had been ongoing for an extended period. Complaints had been lodged with police over alleged harassment of pedestrians and motorists, he said.
Saeed previously said he discovered that the cases had been closed when he sought updates from police, prompting him to protest over what he said was a lack of progress.
Home Minister Ali Ihusan met Saeed after the strike began and said he would seek a solution in consultation with the Prosecutor General, according to Saeed.
Police arrested Fairish yesterday after Saeed’s hunger strike drew public attention.
