President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on Maldivians to prioritize building innovative, sustainable and resilient food systems, emphasizing that access to safe, nutritious and affordable food is essential to national wellbeing.

In a message marking World Food Day 2026, he said this year's theme, "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.", underscores how present day choices and investments will shape future food security. He highlighted the need to expand domestic production, adopt new technologies and manage natural resources sustainably to reduce reliance on imports and strengthen national resilience.

"An an island nation, strengthening food security is essential to our national resilience and economic sustainability. We must embrace new technologies, improve local production, support our farmers and fishers, and protect the natural resources that sustain our livelihoods and communities," the President wrote in a post on X.

The President went on to outline recent government measures to support fisheries and agriculture, including faster payments to fishermen, expanded storage and processing facilities, and new initiatives to boost the fisheries industry.

He also noted progress in agricultural development through public-private partnerships and community level efforts to increase local production and improve access to fresh produce.

President Muizzu stressed that improving supply chains, market access and investments in agriculture will help enhance productivity, while supporting farmers and fishermen. Stressing that food security is a shared responsibility, he urged citizens to work together to strengthen local food systems.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed echoed the call, saying true food security means ensuring every family has access to nutritious food. She highlighted the importance of individual choices such as reducing waste, supporting local produce and adopting sustainable practices.

"Innovation need not always involve sophisticated technology. Together, let us protect our planet and ensure food security for everyone," she wrote in a post shared on X.

World Food Day is observed annually on October 16 to raise awareness on food security and commemorate the founding of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
