The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has taken a statement from former Controller of Immigration Mohamed Sham'aan Waheed in connection with a case being investigated by the commission.

The commission's media official confirmed to "Mihaaru" that Sham'aan was summoned to take a statement for the purpose of information regarding a case under investigation by the authority. However, further details of the case were not provided.

However, it has been learned that ACC is investigating a case regarding the allegations made by Sham'aan against Home Minister Ali Ihusan.

Sham'aan, who was convicted of money laundering and is serving a 25-year prison sentence, has alleged that Ihusan attempted to frame him.

Sham'aan stated that in order to prosecute him, a group of people were arrested along with him, and the state offered deals to those individuals in the name of various leniencies. Sham'aan stated that the state granted those leniencies on the condition that they provide statements against him.

Sham'aan stated that there is no substantiating evidence against him and that this is a sentence handed down by the court directly under instructions from top state officials.

Furthermore, before entering court on the day he was sentenced, Sham'aan stated that Ihusan had engaged in corruption within the ministry regarding the allocation of quota for foreigners, and that he had shared this matter with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. He also stated that day that evidence would be present on his phone.

Regarding the allegations made by Sham'aan that day, the police stated that no such matter was shared with the police by Sham'aan.

In response to the allegations, Ihusan stated in a post made on social media that Sham'aan is making unsubstantiated false allegations. Ihusan stated that while there is no evidence or proof regarding these repeatedly made allegations, he had previously stated to the media as well that Sham'aan is telling lies.

Regarding Sham'aan's statements, Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundu) stated that the claims made by Sham'aan regarding the President were outright false statements.

The state pressed three charges against Sham'aan in the case where immigration officials allegedly took MVR 500,000 from a foreigner who was brought under immigration custody after releasing him, and took it to Sham'aan's home.

In that case, the court ruled to sentence Sham'aan to 25 years in prison, as the charges of participation in extortion, misuse of official capacity, and money laundering pressed against him were proven. That case has now been appealed at the High Court.
