Mohamed Afeef Hussain, who was relieved of his position yesterday as Fenaka Corporation's Managing Director, has been appointed as the State Minister of the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy.
Afeef has confirmed his appointment to Mihaaru News.
Afeef was relieved from his position at Fenaka due to the government's decision to dissolve the company.
Afeef is the third person that has been dismissed from the Fenaka Managing Director position during the current government. In addition to Afeef, Muaz Mohamed Rasheed and Mohamed Najah took on the position during the current government. Muaz is currently MWSC's Deputy Managing Director.
President Muizzu announced the government decided to dissolve Fenaka Corporation, the company that offers water and sewerage services to all Maldivian islands, and transfer electricity services of all islands under STELCO on 7th September.
According to the President, all the issues of corruption and misappropriation conducted within Fenaka are clearly evident through reports from the Auditor General's Office. With this, several efforts had been taken to improve and correct services at Fenaka, he added.
Citing technical experts, the President said that Fenaka is no longer a company that can be sustainably operated. Due to this, the government has ultimately decided to dissolve the company, he said.
Once Fenaka is dissolved, all services provided by the company will then be transferred under STELCO, the President explained.
Afeef, who was also Fenaka's Chairman, played a major role in the government's downsizing efforts of the company after he took charge of the company. Within these efforts, surveys were conducted to ascertain the state of the power stations and lower company costs by reducing the number of employees.
