President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated today that the government aims to expand the agriculture industry in Maldives to the point where enough produce to cover the country's needs can be grown in-country and placed on the market.
On the occasion of Farmer's Day, marked on October 15, President Muizzu shared a post on X stating that the day reminds of the importance of ensuring food safety at the national level, and the important role of farmers in expanding the economy.
The president said that lowering reliance on imports and growing produce on the country's own lands in an environmentally sustainable manner is directly related to upholding the country's sovereignty.
He stressed that it is necessary to increase food production in the country to protect the nation from price fluctuations of food in the global market and the challenges faced in global transportation.
Expansion of the agriculture industry in Maldives will contribute towards securing foreign currency in the country, as well as increasing employment opportunities across the atolls, he added.
The President stated that the government's aim is to produce specific varieties in-country to meet the nation's needs and taking away the necessity to import.
He pledged that the government will continue to assist the agriculture industry to expand their services through modern technology.
