Central bank Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has announced today that with MVR 5 currency notes in circulation in the market decreasing, they have brought in a new stock.
MMA said that MVR 5 currency notes currently in circulation have become old and worn, leading to a decrease in the denomination. To address this, the central bank said it has now brought in a new stock of MVR 5 currency notes.
The new notes will be released into circulation from tomorrow onwards, MMA said.
MMA asserted that it always strives to supply sufficient cash notes to meet the demand in the economy, noting that MVR 5 currency notes are frequently issued to the public and businesses by the authority.
MMA said that the decrease in MVR 5 notes is due to its high usage in trade, and the low rate of MVR 5 note deposits to MMA through banks.
The new MVR 5 notes bear the date 'July 31, 2025 / Safar 6, 1447', the MMA said, adding that it bears the signature of MMA Governor Ahmed Munawwar.
MMA revealed that this is the first new stock of MVR 5 notes brought in since the launch of the "Ran Dhiha Faheh" currency series in 2017.
The new notes have the Dhivehi Rufiyaa symbol displayed. The MMA stated that old MVR 5 notes will also continue to be used.
In January last year and February this year, MMA brought in new stocks of MVR 100 currency notes as well for similar reasons. Last February, they also brought in a new stock of MVR 20 notes.
